INDIAN WELLS, California (AP)?Rafael Nadal breezed past American qualifier Ryan Sweeting 6-3, 6-1 in a third-round match Monday as the second week of the BNP Paribas Open began.

Nadal improved to 28 wins from 32 career matches at Indian Wells, where he?s won twice. The world?s top-ranked men?s player has lost six games in his first two matches while showing no lingering effects from his recent left thigh injury.

?I didn?t play nothing really impressive, but I played solid. I didn?t have big mistakes,? he said. ?The more positive thing is I finished much better than the beginning of the match. So improve during the match always very good news, no??

Women?s top seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark advanced with a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez of Spain that took just over an hour. Wozniacki has improved her results in each of her first four years playing at Indian Wells, where she was runner-up to champion Jelena Jankovic last year.

?It was important to move my feet, try to get as many returns back, and it helped me a little bit that she didn?t get too many first serves in so I could go in and dictate the game,? Wozniacki said. ?As long as I kept her on the baseline, then I felt like I was in control of the point. It was very important to keep the pressure but not force it too much.?

Russian Dinara Safina defeated No. 4 seed Samantha Stosur of Australia 7-6 (2), 6-4 in the lone upset on the women?s side. Stosur reached the semifinals here last year. Former world No. 1 Safina is making a comeback after being sidelined with a back injury last year.

American Sam Querrey faced Fernando Verdasco of Spain in a later night match.

Other women?s winners were No. 8 Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, No. 9 Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, No. 16 Maria Sharapova and No. 22 Alisa Kleybanova of Russia.

Sharapova beat 20th-seeded Aravene Rezai of France, 6-2, 6-2 as the Russian star returns to the WTA Tour after a five-week absence because of illness.

?I started like I didn?t have my cup of coffee or something, didn?t have my peeps around, so that was disappointing,? Sharapova said. ?When she?s on, she can be one of the toughest players to play against. She had a lot of errors. I returned a lot better, and served a lot better in the second set.?

Petrova needed more than two hours to derail the upset hopes American wild card Christina McHale, who lost 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 when the Russian sent a backhand down the line on match point.

There were two upsets on the men?s side: fourth-seeded Robin Soderling of Sweden and No. 11 seed Nicolas Almagro of Spain both lost.

Soderling fell to No. 32 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany, 7-6 (8), 6-4 after holding five set points in the tiebreaker; while 23rd-seeded Albert Montanes of Spain took out Almagro 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Soderling was bothered by a left foot injury that first occurred during Sweden?s victory over Russia in Davis Cup play nearly 10 days ago.

?I lost the match when I decided to go on court,? he said. ?I shouldn?t have done that. It?s pretty stupid to play.?

Soderling, who was in bed for five days with a fever before the tournament began, had yet to have his foot examined by a doctor. He is scheduled to play at Key Biscayne, Florida next week.

?Hopefully, they won?t find anything bad,? he said. ?The more I play on the foot, the worse it gets.?

American qualifier Donald Young?s run ended with a 6-0, 6-4 loss to 25th-seeded Tommy Robredo of Spain. Young upset fifth-ranked Andy Murray two days ago.

Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina, the 2009 U.S. Open champion, defeated 20th-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine 7-6 (3), 6-3. Qualifier Somdev Devvarman of India outlasted Xavier Malisse 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (5).

Nadal delayed the start of his post-match interview to watch the tiebreaker since he will play Devvarman in the fourth round.

World No. 1 Rafael Nadal, who has to defend 5,000 points in the upcoming clay-court season due to his title runs at Monte Carlo, Rome, Madrid and Roland Garros last year, said he?s not concerned about it because he doesn?t think the same way as the 52-week revolving ranking system does.

"Even if I like or I don't like, that's what's gonna happen. Always the same," he said. "I don't have to defend no points, because every season start from zero, and I am focused always. And when I am playing in Monte Carlo, if I do quarterfinals, I win, I don't know, 160 points, not I am losing 800 points. So that's how I approach every tournament. For me [at Indian Wells], I defend semifinals; and if I do quarterfinals, my approach is am I losing points? Defend or not defend, doesn't matter. If I don't have to defend that points, for sure I'm not gonna be No. 1. I don't believe about defend points or not. I believe in play well and try to win. You play well, you have chances. If you are not playing well, doesn't matter if you don't defend nothing or a lot. You not gonna win."?Matthew Cronin

LONDON (AP)?The Davis Cup quarterfinals and the Fed Cup semifinals will use Hawk-Eye replay technology this year.

The International Tennis Federation says it is increasing the amount of matches in both team competitions that will be able to call upon the system to settle disputed line calls.

ITF President Francesco Ricci Bitti says ?the increased use of electronic review at ties reflects the importance of these competitions, and creates added interest and entertainment for spectators.?

The technology will only be used on hard courts and grass courts.

Hawk-Eye was first used in the Davis Cup for the 2006 final between Russia and Argentina. It was used for the Fed Cup final in 2007, and was then extended to the Davis Cup semifinals in 2010.

As the situation in Japan continues to deteriorate in the wake of Friday's massive 8.9 magnitude earthquake, the need for assistance has spurred a number of stars to reach out to fans to enlist their help.

Just days after announcing the initial dates of his first tour, the My Violent Torpedo/ Defeat Is Not an Option Show, troubled actor Charlie Sheen announced that he will be donating $1 from each ticket sold to the Red Cross Japanese Earthquake Relief Fund.

Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda has also gotten into the game quickly, designing T-shirts to benefit his band's Music for Relief charity. One shirt features the image of a paper crane-like white butterfly above the LP logo, and the other one reads "Not Alone" in a red, white and blue font. Donations of $10 can be made by texting "MFR" to 85944.

After tweeting on Sunday morning, "Remember as you go about your day please #prayforjapan & if you are able, text REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10 to Japan's emergency relief," Katy Perry followed up later in the day with the message, "Imagine ... if we ALL texted REDCROSS to 90999 we'd have raised over 60 million dollars for #JAPAN RELIEF! BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE! BE!"

A growing collection of stars is urging fans to donate to Japanese earthquake relief. On Friday, Lady Gaga sprung into action and offered her fans a special wristband whose proceeds will go to help the victims.

"I Designed a Japan Prayer Bracelet. Buy It/ Donate here and ALL proceeds will go to Tsunami Relief Efforts. Go Monsters," Gaga wrote. She also urged fans to visit the Citizen Effect website, where contributions will be matched by Google CEO Eric Schmidt and his wife, Wendy. They've offered to match the first $100,000 donated to a special fund set up to help the Red Cross deliver emergency services to people in Japan.

Other celebrities urging action include Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Adam Lambert, Diddy and many more who've sent their prayers to those affected via Twitter. Britney Spears encouraged fans to donate to relief organizations, tweeting, "So tragic. My heart is breaking for Japan."

Also making pleas were Conan O'Brien, Chris Brown and George Takei, each asking their followers to donate to the Red Cross.

As the official death toll in the worst quake to hit the island nation mounted on Monday (March 14) to 1,833 — with thousands more believed to have perished — Japan was facing a growing threat from a number of hobbled nuclear power plants. A second explosion in two days occurred at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant on Monday morning, just hours before the plant's #2 reactor lost its cooling abilities.

While no significant release of radioactive materials is believed to have occurred yet, the race to cool down and secure the nation's nuclear plants is as urgent as the search for survivors from the devastating natural disaster. New images and video continue to emerge that paint a partial picture of the destruction in towns such as the 20,000-resident Minami Sanriku, which CNN reported had been turned into a virtual pile of rubble by the quake and the ensuing tsunami.

As gas and food stocks run low, Japanese citizens have been asked to ration their supplies while the United States and 69 other nations have pledged to help with search and rescue efforts.

For more information on what you can do to help with earthquake and tsunami relief efforts in Japan, head to MTV Act, or text REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP)?Top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki will play in the Family Circle Cup.

Tournament organizers said Friday that the 2009 runner-up had committed to the tournament in Charleston, S.C.

Defending champion Samantha Stosur, Jelena Jankovic, Maria Sharapova and American Melanie Oudin are among the top players who have agreed to play at the event on April 2-10 at the Family Circle Tennis Center at Daniel Island.

Wozniacki has 13 singles titles and more than $8.5 million in prize money in six years on the WTA tour.

The 20-year-old from Denmark won six of her titles last year and became the 20th woman to take the top spot in the rankings when she ousted Serena Williams in October.

Lady Gaga is doing her part to help those affected by the 8.9-magnitude earthquake that struck Japan on Friday (March 11). The devastating quake triggered a 10-meter tsunami and now threatens Pacific coastal areas, including Hawaii and the West Coast.

The star tweeted on Friday that she has designed a special wristband with all of the proceeds going to benefit those affected by the disaster.

"I Designed a Japan Prayer Bracelet. Buy It/Donate here and ALL proceeds will go to Tsunami Relief Efforts. Go Monsters," Gaga wrote.

She then shared a link with more information about the red-and-white bracelet on which the words "we pray for Japan" are written along with an image of a hand making Gaga's signature monster paw gesture. "Little Monsters, show your support for Japan with this 'We Pray for Japan' wristband! Choose your price to add an additional donation with your wristband," the description for the bracelet reads. "All proceeds go directly to Japan relief efforts."

Gaga is the latest celebrity to reach out and help shed light on the devastation left by the tragic events in Japan. Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Adam Lambert, Diddy and many more sent their prayers to those affected via Twitter. Britney Spears encouraged fans to donate to relief organizations, tweeting, "So tragic. My heart is breaking for Japan."

"Just heard about the huge earthquake and tsunami in Japan," Kim Kardashian wrote. "My prayers are with everyone in Japan. Seeing all of this footage in Japan is devastating! Please help the people of Japan by texting REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation."

American Ryan Harrison, who scored his first ATP-level victory of the year with a 6-7, 7-6, 6-3 win over Jeremy Chardy at Indian Wells, arrived at the tournament without a formal coach or his father, Pat, who taught him how to play and still occasionally coaches him. Harrison, 18, is at the tournament with a friend and still looking for a full-time coach after splitting with Martin Damn in February and ending a brief trial with Christo van Rensburg. Harrison said he?s had a difficult time finding the right fit.

"Anyone who has ever seen a father/son relationship with coaching, father/son is obviously a really tough, sensitive situation,? he said. "But one of the big things in my dad's situation is the fact that I do have a little brother [Christian] who is playing competitive pro tennis, as well. The biggest thing for me is I'm looking for somebody that can be there every day, that can really help me develop my game and help me with the whole process of being in the top in the world. My dad doesn't like flying so that makes it tough to go to Europe and go to places that aren't easily drivable. On top of everything, he's also 50 years old.  So to say he's gonna travel 25 weeks a year away from my mother?and I have a little sister?he is not going to focus on me and my brother and neglect my sister, who is 14 years old.  It's a very tough situation, because my dad is an extremely loyal person. He's always gonna stand by every one of his kids and my mom. And so for him to say, I'm gonna be Ryan's full-time coach and go with him everywhere, he would pretty much be telling my mom he couldn't see her and telling my brother and sister he couldn't spend time with them."?Matthew Cronin
